The Ghost , Physical Dream Extraction Theatre by Zeesy Powers @ Drawn & Quarterly (Wed. April 21)

April 20, 2010

Don’t miss this last minute performance tomorrow, April 21, 7pm @ Drawn & Quarterly, 211 Bernard Ouest
. A Canadian première, The Ghost, by Zeesy Powers, mixes watercolour, animation, live dance and audio collage.

Details from the D&Q newsletter:

We are proud to add a very last minute event to our already brimming April events calendar: the Canadian Premiere of The Ghost, Physical Dream Extraction Theatre by Zeesy Powers.

After performances in Japan, Berlin and Los Angeles, Montreal gets its first look at this new projection performance by Zeesy Powers. […] The Ghost is an obsessive and beautiful work based in the body, floating in the sky.

D&D MTL Sketchbook 2009: Matthew Reichmann

April 20, 2010

Matthew Reichmann is an illustrator born and raised in NDG.

“At that time I’d just left film school and was tearing my hair out trying to further develop my style. When one day a voice in my head said: “Why not just do faces?” […] So I set to work briskly doing quick washes of faces, some monstrous, others more human. All of them are the psychological spewing of my unconscious. In total I believe that I made twenty in one sitting, spending no more than 5-15 minutes on each face.”

Matt has exhibited his work in numerous group shows around Montreal.

“Garde maman, c’est une grosse scène de guerre…”
“Le pigeon c’est fait coupé la tête …”*

The Marcel Dzama show currently up at the Musée d’art contemporain (MAC) de Montreal is a feast for the eyes. This is Dzama’s largest solo exhibition (cudos to the MAC), and features not only gorgeous large scale drawings in his signature style and colour palette (composed on several sheets of paper laid out to form a larger canvas, or on aged player piano paper scrolls), but also elaborate dioramas, sculpture, paintings and film.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to peek into the inner mind of this young and influential Canadian-born artist.

The show is up until April 25th, and don’t forget that Wednesdays from 6-9 pm admission is free.

Reviews: Marcel Dzama: Canada’s unlikely art star (Toronto Star)
Marcel Dzama: Thinking Bigger (Canadian Art)

Music Video: Department of Eagles’ No One Does It Like You

*Quotes from one of several young children checking out the exhibition on a Thursday afternoon.
