Interview: My Own Private Dante’s Disneyland (Red Bird, Opening Feb. 11)

February 9, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

Jacinthe Loranger is a silkscreening and installation artist based in Montreal. Known for her psychedelic landscapes and colourful characters, My Own Private Dante’s Disneyland is a series of photographic self portraits that poses the question: what if Alice fell down that rabbit hole not as a child, but as a woman in her thirties?

We asked Jacinthe a few questions about how drawing figures into her work…

D&D: Where does your inspiration for this show, and your work in general come from these days?

D&D: How does drawing factor into your silkscreen work? What is your process when you start a project like this (do you work from sketches, use source photos, etc) How much is planned and how much happens by chance?

D&D: Do you consider yourself a drawer, or is it just a way to get to the final silkscreened work?

Drink & Draw Sunday Feb. 14, 1-4pm: CROSSBREEDING!

February 8, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

(message en français ci-bas)

It´s the middle of winter, deep in hybernation mode, life as we know it is sound asleep. But! somewhere in Montreal, high up in the downtown craziness of the city, lies a tiny paradise of plants and trees and love. Wanna find out where it is? Better yet, wanna draw the beauty inside it? Then come and draw with us at the Concordia Greenhouse, perched on the 13th floor of the Concordia Hall Building, 1455 De Maisonneuve W. Take the elevator to the 12th floor, turn left and follow the signs to the Greenhouse (up the emergency stairs).

The Greenhouse is undergoing lots of change these days thanks to the labour and love of the volunteers and Arlene (Greenhouse coordinator), and we will be able to witness the new seedlings they have been planting, along with the beautiful companion plants that fill the newly finished wooden beds. We´ll have the whole Greenhouse to ourselves and can occupy whichever rooms we feel most inspired by!

Meet there on Sunday February 14 at 1pm. In celebration of this day of love, the theme of the session is Cross Breeding.

————————-

Drawing is Thinking: Milton Glaser

January 17, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

“I’m convinced that it’s only through drawing that I look at things carefully. That the act of drawing makes me conscious of what I’m looking at. If I wasn’t drawing I sense that I wouldn’t be seeing…”
